Lola's Election Unit

In honor of the election last week Lola and I did a Literature unit based on the book Ballot Box Battle. We learned a great deal about the history of the Women's Suffrage movement here in the USA, along with lots about Elizabeth Cady Stanton. We also did some research about the (then) current presidential candidates, looked into what the job of President actually involved and the historical nature of this election. The unit culminated with watching President-elect Obama's speech late on Tuesday night. Lola was excited that 'her' candidate won....competitive as ever!
Here are some pictures of Lola's Lapbook.

Tayo's Cinderella Lapbook

Tayo and I worked on this unit of her choosing for a few weeks. We read a great deal of Cinderella stories for this unit and learned about France, Telling time, qualities of a princess and Pumpkins among other things.
Here are some pictures of the finished Lapbook...

Some random pictures....

Our leaf unit!

We had a great time on our leaf unit a few weeks back. We read lots of books about leaves and fall. We learnt about photosynthesis, types of trees and types of trees. We had fun looking at leaves and using them in our art activities. Here are some pictures!

Playing in the leaves is so much fun!

Cracking Pecans we picked!

Funny faces!

All the books we read this week.

Fall in our neighborhood.

This tree was just spectacular up close...

Kemi...

This is just too cute! She is getting bigger by the minute it seems, she is now eating solid foods - loves rice, oatmeal, carrots and apples, not so sure about peas and sweet potatoes! She is teething right now so keeps blowing bubbles and making funny faces - gotta get some pics of that! Rolling over is a breeze, the minute you lay her down she is flipping over, getting back is the tough part! Sitting will be next - she is able to sit for a little while resting with her arms or being lightly supported by us. I know when she masters this she will be overjoyed!
Here are some pictures! Enjoy!

She played with that spoon for hours!

How can we resist that smile!

Told you she likes carrots!

That's my !

Our Stone Mountain fun!

I'm so behind in uploading photos to my blog, so here is the first of many posts with updated photos and news!
Here are pictures of a trip we took last month to Stone Mountain with our good friends and their daughter. We had a great time and the weather was perfect!

Words to live by...

I read these today and had to post them to my blog...

1. Pray

2. Go to bed on time.

3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.

4. Say No to projects that won't fit into your time schedule or that will compromise your mental health.

5. Delegate tasks to capable others.

6. Simplify and unclutter your life.

7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.)

8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.

10. Take one day at a time.

11. Separate worries from concerns . If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety . If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.

12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases.

13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.

14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.

15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday.

16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line.

17. Get enough rest.

18. Eat right.

19 Get organized so everything has its place.

20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.

21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.

22. Every day, find time to be alone.

23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray.

24. Make friends with Godly people.

25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.

26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good 'Thank you Jesus .'

27. Laugh.

28. Laugh some more!

29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.

30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

31. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).

32. Sit on your ego.

33 Talk less; listen more.

34. Slow down.

35. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.

36.[*] Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before. GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU.

Change CAN happen!

Last night I sat with my husband and daughter and watched the world become a better place. It is now a place where a child can look to the future and believe that all their dreams can come true. It is a place where the older generation can look back on all they've been through and say it was worth it. For a moment we can believe that all things are truly possible. With the history of this Nation behind us, now I feel we can begin to look to a brighter future. Whatever your politics, you can't deny this is an historic moment in time.

Consider this:
Romans 13:1-5
"Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. 4 The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 5 So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience".

Lets remember all that has been lost in the name of 'right and wrong'. Lets remember all the lives that have been lost in the fight for civil rights and please lets remember that God is in control!

My project 365...

Check it out here!

Another reason...

...to love your Crockpot!

Homemade Yogurt! You have got to try it! It is so easy, so yummy, so healthy (no HFCS or other weird stuff) and saves you oodles of $$$$! This yogurt tastes fresher and creamier than store bought plain yogurt - I will not go back to buying the stuff again! As I type the kiddos are eating homemade frozen strawberry yogurt ice pops and loving them! This is just too easy to miss out on!
I used 2% milk and we are sweetening it with all-fruit spread or honey. I can't believe I have taken so long to make this!

Off now to see what else this great machine can be used for! LOL!
